The London-based half of Swedish production duo Montauk (Faye, Say Lou Lou, Sportsman), 1987 drops his latest, “Bomb”.
What’s really interesting about 1987 (AKA Victor Holmberg) is that he sings in Swedish. Of course, that’s a gross simplification, but it’s also the crux of what makes his output thus far so brilliant. Whether the pensive heartache of “Michelle“, the melancholy croon of “Ocean“, or the latest “Bomb”, it doesn’t seem to matter that you can’t understand a word of it. The message carries through all the same.
Lending emotional weight to a vocal such that you don’t even need to know the words is just plain amazing. But laying that vocal on a shifting bed of dancefloor anthem and downtempo balladry? Brilliance. Listen to ‘Bomb’ below.
1987 will be DJing at the Tove Styrke show at London’s Old Blue Last this week along with Lucas Nord. RSVP for a free ticket.
